How does one become a dual national?

Naturalisation as a British Citizen 

To be eligible you must: 

  • Have been lived in the UK for at least five years 
  • Have settled status 
  • Pass the Life in the UK test 
  • Meet the English Language and good character requirement 
Countries Permitting Dual Nationality

Dual nationality is permitted, but is not limited in the following countries: 

  • Australia 
  • Canada 
  • Ireland 
  • Pakistan 
Countries Not Permitting Dual Nationality

The following list outlines where dual nationality is not permitted but is not limited to, and you may have to renounce this citizenship when you become naturalised as a British Citizen. 

  • China 
  • Malaysia 
  • United Arab Emirates
